What Is WPM?

WPM means words per minute. On a typing speed test it is not a count of dictionary words. It is a rate derived from characters and time. Type Pace Lab treats five characters—letters, spaces, and punctuation—as one standard word.

Why five characters

English words vary in length. A five-character unit lets tests compare passages that are not identical. A space counts. A comma counts. That is why skipping punctuation to “go faster” still shows up in accuracy even if your fingers feel quick.

Gross and net

Gross WPM uses every character currently in the input box. Net WPM uses only characters that match the passage at the same position. If you type 300 characters in one minute and 270 of them match, gross WPM is (300 / 5) / 1 = 60, and net WPM is (270 / 5) / 1 = 54.

Accuracy

Accuracy is correct positions divided by typed characters, as a percentage. It does not guess intent. A later correction removes the mismatch from the buffer; the minute you spent fixing it still sits in the timer.

What a number cannot tell you

A one-minute test on easy prose is not the same task as five minutes of advanced sentences. Fatigue, keyboard, and whether you looked at the screen all move the result. Use the typing test under similar conditions if you want to compare days. The exact formulas live on the scoring methodology page. A longer discussion is in What Is a Good Typing Speed in WPM?
