How to Take a Typing Speed Test Online

A typing speed test is a timed comparison between what you type and a reference passage. It is not a personality score and it is not a job certificate. It answers a narrower question: in this window of time, on this text, how many standard words did you produce, and how many characters sat in the right place?

Type Pace Lab’s test sits at the top of the homepage and on the dedicated typing test page. The steps below follow that engine, including the one-minute default.

How a timed test works

You see a passage. You click the typing field. Nothing starts yet. The first real character you type starts the clock. While the test runs, each keystroke updates a character-by-character comparison. Matching characters get a muted green underline. Mismatches get a soft coral background and a text error count, so color is not the only signal. The next expected character has a caret marker.

When the countdown reaches zero, the field becomes read-only. Gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy freeze. If localStorage is available, a numeric record is stored on the device. The passage you typed is not uploaded.

You can also press End Test before zero. That is an early-ended attempt. WPM then uses actual elapsed time, and the result sheet says so. Early-ended records can be saved, but they stay out of the main average unless you include them on the results page.

How to choose a duration

Thirty seconds is a snapshot. It is useful when you want to check whether a keyboard feels right, or when you only have a gap between tasks. It punishes a slow start: if the first five seconds are spent finding F and J, those seconds are a large slice of the whole.

One minute is the default on this site. It is long enough for a few sentences and short enough that fatigue rarely dominates. If you are comparing days, keep using one minute and the same difficulty so the task stays similar.

Two minutes asks for a little more stamina. Five minutes is a different kind of work: attention drifts, posture slumps, and a single tangle of errors can take a long time to unpick. The five-minute mode concatenates original passages so a fast typist does not run out of text. It does not loop one sentence.

Change duration before you begin. Changing it during a run asks for confirmation, because the current attempt will be cleared. That is deliberate. Silently wiping a live test would be worse than a prompt.

How the timer starts

There is no Start button that begins the clock while you are still reading. The status line says TEST READY until you type. The timer uses performance.now() for elapsed time and requestAnimationFrame to draw the countdown. Remaining time is duration minus actual elapsed time, not a counter that subtracts one once per second and hopes for the best.

If you switch browser tabs, elapsed time still accumulates. The test does not pause itself in the background. Browser scheduling is not perfectly precise, and this site does not claim that it is. Incomplete IME composition does not start or finish the test; the engine waits until composition ends.

Pasting and drag-and-drop into the field are blocked. The point of the exercise is typing. Assistive technologies that use the native textarea still have a real control to focus.

Why the reference passage matters

WPM is easier on short words and harder on punctuation-heavy prose. Easy passages here use common vocabulary and short sentences. Standard passages vary sentence length. Advanced passages include commas, semicolons, quotation marks, and numbers. If you compare a Monday easy test with a Friday advanced test, you are comparing two tasks.

New Passage loads a different selection when possible. Restart clears the attempt and assembles a fresh sequence for the chosen duration. The passage is original editorial prose, not a book excerpt.

How to correct errors

Backspace works. When you delete a wrong character, it leaves the current buffer, so it no longer counts as incorrect in the live metrics. The time you spent noticing and fixing it remains in the elapsed minutes. That is why two people with the same final accuracy can still show different WPM: one of them took a longer route through the same letters.

You do not have to correct every error. Some typists prefer to keep moving. On this site, an uncorrected mismatch stays in the incorrect count and lowers net WPM, because net WPM is built from correct positions, not from typed positions minus a separate penalty table.

How to read the final sheet

Net WPM is the large primary number. It is correctly matched characters divided by five, then divided by elapsed minutes. Accuracy is the large percentage: correct positions over typed characters. Gross WPM uses all typed characters. You also see duration, correct count, incorrect count, and difficulty.

The sheet is a snapshot. It does not label you poor, average, or professional. One minute on one passage is not a permanent ability. Copy results and download CSV export the numbers you actually produced. There is no certificate file.

A one-minute walkthrough

Open the homepage test. Leave duration on 1m and difficulty on Standard. Read the first sentence of the passage, then click the typing field. Type that sentence. Watch Time left, Net WPM, Accuracy, and Errors on the rail. If a coral mark appears, decide whether to backspace or continue. Keep going until the timer hits 00:00. Read the result sheet. If you want another sample, press Try again rather than refreshing the whole page. Saved sessions appear in Your Recent Typing Sessions.

If the number surprises you, run a second test with the same settings before you change your practice plan. First-test nerves are ordinary. The scoring methodology page lists the formulas in the same form the code uses. For more on why scores bounce, see What Is a Good Typing Speed in WPM?

FAQ

Does the test start when the page loads?
No. It stays READY until the first character.
Can I pause?
There is no pause control. Ending early calculates WPM from elapsed time.
Why did my accuracy rise after I fixed a letter?
Metrics use the current buffer. The mismatch is gone; the clock is not rewound.
Where do I practice without a timer?
Use the practice lanes.
